Weeks 10 & 11: Nostalgia #VirginiaSwift

Looking at my edit from the last two weeks, I think a lot of what I photographed has to do with nostalgia and a sense of home.

Obviously there are a lot of photos of children, most of my brain keeps saying "cute kids are boring" (thanks Mr. Cooper) but I think kids are interesting to photograph because they are so expressive. The evening I spent at Green Thumb farm with the four youths was probably my favorite assignment of the last two weeks. I found myself running around with the kids, getting chased by a little lamb named Jimmy and jumping on hay bales.

Recently I've been thinking a lot about where I want to go in the next few years which has also spawned a lot of retrospection. Maybe this comes off in the photos a little, maybe not. I may not be sure yet of where I'm going but I believe that even when you think you know exactly what you're going, nothing ever happens like you expect it will...

I'll just try to take even better pictures next week and hope for the best.

Jane, 5, is handed a rabbit by her elder brother, Tanner, 14.

Jane lets go of the rabbit and a chase ensues.

Jane, Tanner and Josh around the tree.

Zachary (not a brother but a friend) got his shoe stuck in the mud, Josh went to help.

Jane on the fence.

This is Sophia and her brother, you'll learn more about her in the next few weeks.

Saint Patricks Day parade involved tiny horses and tiny children.

This is Jasmine. She lives at a women's shelter in Fredericksburg. She just had her 19th birthday and this is her son, Elijah. Readers note: this is from like a month ago, I just forgot about it until now.

The play room of a young lady that had a stroke when she was 10 that left her paralyzed from the chest down, she is now 12.

The bedroom of an older lady that had her leg amputated two years ago.

This woman was living in a tent behind a gas station in rural Virginia until January when she, her brother and a friend were moved into a home by a religious group in town. Before moving into the tent, she lived in Richmond with an abusive partner.

This is the brother of the lady above. He has a deteriorating disk in his back and hasn't been able to work since 2008. He was homeless since 2010 until January when he moved into this home.

This is the home that the houseless trio moved into. It's final member bidding me farewell from his room.

And finally, waiting at a hardware store.

Week 8 & 9 of #VirginiaSwift

Here are some photos from the last two weeks! I shot a lot of sports and I'm getting better but I have much to improve on (which is why I'm only putting one sports photo in). I met some really wonderful people and I'm excited for the next two weeks.

Sports, Sports, Sports.

I've started work on a new story.

Reverend Louis T.W. Jackson was involved with the civil rights movement and went on the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

This lady has become a celebrity at Riverbend High School because she's the one that announces when school is delayed or canceled. People like to take selfies with her.
